Paws
For Life Program
A simple, yet very effective, to raise funds for our shelter pets.
All you have to do is get people to buy a Paw for $1, $5, or $10,
they get a Paw to write their name on and you post the Paw somewhere
in your school or business. So simple!
How
Your Store/Restaurant/Bank/Business etc can Participate:
Step 1: Hang "Paws for Life" posters (provided
by us) in strategic locations throughout your establishment.
Step 2: Provide each cashier or receptionist with a supply
of Paws (provided by us), a black marker and tape.
Step 3: Instruct your cashiers or receptionists to ask customers
if they'd like to donate $1, $5, $10 (each monetary level will be
a different color paw)) to the Monmouth County SPCA by purchasing
a Paw. All donations will go directly toward the care and feeding
of the animals at our shelter.
Step 4: Ask interested parties to sign the Paw. Hang signed
Paws in a central location in your establishment.
Step 5: We will either send a volunteer weekly to pick up
the monies collected by your establishment or you may choose to
send a check to the MCSPCA for the total donations. Download
this form to state which option you wish.
Email Ellen or
call 732-542-2030 to let us know you would like to participate and
if you have any questions.
How
Your School can Participate:
Step 1: Hang Paws for Life posters (provided by us) in strategic
locations throughout your classroom or school lobby.
Step 2: The class teacher should provide each student with
ten paws (provided by us),.
Step 3: Each child should be instructed to ask his or her family,
neighbors and friends if they'd like to donate $1 (or more, if they
wish) to the SPCA of Monmouth County by purchasing a Paw. All donations
will go directly toward the care and feeding of the animals at our
shelter.
Step 4: Ask interested parties to sign the Paw. Hang signed
Paws in a central location in your school.
Step 5: Based on the teacher's election on the form (download
HERE), at the end of the program, we will either send a volunteer
to pick up the monies collected by the students or the school may
choose to issue a check to the SPCA for the entire program's donations. |

Pet Promotion Program
Help us introduce our wonderful pets to your coworkers, friends
and neighbors!
For every one of our homeless cats and dogs, there's a loving family
somewhere, searching for just that kind of pet. All we need to do
is make the connection between pet and family. And you can help!
Through
our Pet Promotion Program, we want to make information about our
cats and dogs available to as many people as possible throughout
the community. Just ask your employer, school, civic group or local
store if they'll agree to make copies of the dog and cat profiles
from our website available to those who frequent their locations.
Then, all you need to do is provide them
with a supply of updated profiles each week (or, if you have access
to a copy machine, you make it easy by providing the copies).
Or, print out the adoption pages and post them on bulletin boards
at work, in vet offices, at local stores, anywhere!
By taking just a few minutes of your time, you can increase awareness
of our shelter pets and help get them adopted. For more information
on how you can help, please email Laurie.

Dedicated
to Gentle Ben
For
two years, Gentle Ben languished at our shelter, waiting patiently
for a new family to give him a second chance at happiness, but the
right family never seemed to arrive. Inexplicably, adopters always
seemed to overlook Gentle Ben's abundant charms. We despaired that
Ben would never find his "forever family." Enter Joan, one
of our dedicated volunteers, who had the idea to provide copies of
the dog profiles from our website to her coworkers, in the hopes of
piquing their interest in adopting one or more of the dogs in our
care. A lovely couple saw Gentle Ben's picture, read his description
and promptly fell in love with him. He's now a devoted member of their
family, enjoying the fresh air of their spacious property and the
comforting warmth of their hearth and heart. For two years, they had
been looking for a companion just like Ben, they just hadn't known
where to find him. And so was born the Pet Promotion Program, to help
connect pets in search of families with families in search of pets.
We lovingly dedicate this program to Gentle Ben. |

BEST
Program (Behavior Enrichment Socialization and Training)
At the MCSPCA we love the animals. We want the best for them, and we want their lives to be as full and stress-free as possible. In addition, we realize that some animals have special needs and may need a little special help so they can find the loving homes they deserve. This is why BEST was developed. We need volunteers to become a part of the BEST program, to help train and socialize shelter pets.
There are 4 basic parts of the BEST program:
1. Basic socialization. This includes taking dogs to the park, to the beach or on adventure days and letting them get a break from kennel life. It also includes playing with the cats and making sure they have friends as they wait for their homes.
2. Play groups. This includes introducing dogs to each other and ultimately supervising their interaction. It also includes taking these same dogs (in pairs usually) to play in the park or to go on adventure days.
3. Fosters or sleep-overs. This includes taking animals on either extended foster visits (dogs and cats) to your home or on one-night sleep-overs (dogs only).
4. Socialization. This includes working with more difficult animals and helping them to become more adoptable.
Training methods used are reward-based. No choke collars, prong collars or other aversive techniques or equipment are ever used. We believe that training should be fun, and we seek to build loving relationships with our animals.
More detailed information can be found in our BEST
Newsletter.
If you are interested in becoming a BEST volunteer you must first become a MCSPCA volunteer (as described at the top of this page).

Animal Transport- We need people
willing to pick up pets at the shelter and bring them to groomers,
the vet, or training and then return them to the shelter when they
are ready.
Donation Pickup- We get calls from people
all the time who want to donate things like pet food and need someone
to go get it for us and bring it to the shelter.
Pet Therapy- Volunteers and their
own personal pets visit nursing homes etc. to help bring cheer and
comfort to people who need it. Volunteers would be required to complete
a handlers course and their pet must be evaluated for the program.
Volunteers would need to be available during the weekdays.
-Handy person to do small fix-it jobs around the shelter is
desperately needed- any time available would be greatly appreciated!
Please call 732-542-1036 if you can help!
-Dog walkers- any time spent out of the kennel is a great time
for our dogs. Are you an experienced dog handler? Take one of our
shelter dogs to the beach! Off-season is a great time to do this,
and it is a wonderful thing to do for our dogs. Or, take them across
the street to the park for a walk. Good for your health and great
for our dogs! Please come to a volunteer meeting if you would like
to walk dogs.
-Kitty socialization- come by and play with the many cats at
our shelter, so they do not forget what it is like to be petted or
handled by loving people! If you are an experienced 'cat person',
you can help with our tougher cases. Please come to a volunteer meeting
if you would like to do this.
-Cleaning- Help clean between 9AM and 12noon, not a glamorous
job but very important for the health and welfare of our shelter pets.
Come in and help clean our dog kennels, or help clean the cat cages.
We also always need help washing dog and cat dishes!
-Adoption Outreaches: Help with PetsMart and Petco adoption outreaches,
where we bring our dogs and cats every weekend. Periodically, we hold
Adoption Events at places like Sickles Market and Atlantic Farms.
Adoption Outreaches require transport and handling of dogs, help with
cats, clerical help etc. Please come to a volunteer meeting if you
are interested in helping out with adoption events and help get our
animals loving homes!
-Lost and Found: What a wonderful way to help both owners and
pets. To help someone reunite with a lost loved pet is so heartwarming!
We are looking for someone to help on a regular basis.
-Unfold newspapers. Every morning,
every cage gets cleaned and lined with fresh newspapers. Unfolding
these newspapers takes a lot of time. Any help here would be greatly
appreciated! Unfold your newspapers and bring them in!
There are many more ways you can help- please come to our volunteer
meeting and find out more! |
