Heaven (was Teeny), adopted November, 2001

My name is Laurel Stryker and on my 17th birthday in November 2001, my father brought me into the MCSPCA to adopt a kitten after my cat passed away. One of the volunteer's pointed out the smallest little kitten I had ever seen and said her name was "Teeny." "Teeny" was taken away from her mother too soon and hardly had any hair because of fleas. On top of which, the poor thing had a cold! The volunteer told me that because of all "Teeny" went through and at her age, she was very nervous and did not like people.

When I saw her, I fell in love and adopted her despite all of her problems. When I got her home, I renamed her Heaven and slowly, she grew her hair back and began to trust me. Though she is still a very nervous cat and really only allows me to hold her, Heaven is the sweetest cat and loves to play. She is still a teeny little thing too. At 4 years old, she only weighs 7 lbs.
Last month, Heaven had surgery to remove a melanoma from her back. Even though she finds herself without alot of her beautiful fur again, she is fine and is sweeter than ever! Adopting Heaven was the best thing I have ever done in my life and the MCSPCA is the best group of people around!

Gina, adopted November, 2001

We adopted our cat Gina about a year ago to the day from the MCSPCA. She was known as Stray #25610. She was the little black and white cat that had been found trapped in a cat carrier outside in the cold.

I just wanted to let you know that she is doing wonderful! She gets along great with our dog and other two cats (all MCSPCA alumni), and she is the friendliest, most affectionate cat I've ever seen. It took a little while for her to come out of her shell but now I can't imagine life without her. When we first got her she had coarse fur, dandruff, and a respiratory infection, and she was very skinny, but now she has beautiful silky fur. She is such a dainty little girl, and she loves to have conversations with us, speaking her own language of chirps. She is very intelligent as well, and once when the washer machine was not working properly she let me know just like Lassie, chirping at me and tossing her head until I followed her downstairs.

Gina especially loves her daddy, and they take naps together all the time. She likes to play with her little brother Lando, and she really loves to watch the birds and squirrels eating at the feeders outside the windows.

I have attached some photos of her. There is a group shot of all the cats eating with Roxy the dog looking on. Then there is Gina's first christmas; she got so many presents to play with that she got a little overwhelmed and had to take a nap on the window seat. The third is her with her sister Lily.

Gina would like to thank everyone at the shelter for taking care of her while she was there, and also for taking care of Roxy, Lily, and Lando, who were called Abby, Lilly, and Harry while they were there.

Sincerely,
Jennifer and Tom Child.

Chief, adopted New Year's Eve, 2004

My Fiancé Michael Olivieri and I Candice Symington adopted our Chief, a black and white Border Collie on New Year’s Eve 2004. Chief was in the shelter because he was bought from a Point Pleasant pet store in which the owners’ said that they could not handle him, he was very active and they lived in a town house so there was not enough room for him.

I found Chief because Michael and I just recently had bought our first home and I needed a dog. There was always a family dog in my household growing up and when we bought the house it was time for me to have my own family dog, who is like my son. All the pets my family had were always from a shelter or an animal that needed a home. The first time I saw Chief was after my routine visit with my neurologist , I told him about my search for a dog and he suggested I visit the MCSPCA because that is where he got his dogs from. So after hearing that my Mom and I took a ride to the MCSPCA to look at the dogs. As we were walking through we saw a 4 month old Border Collie named Chief. I asked about him and was told all of his details, and I put an application in on him. Well, December 31, 2004 I received a phone call telling me that I can come pick up Chief. So I went and picked him up and he has been like a son to us ever since. Chief being a Border Collie is very active and we have a huge fenced in backyard so he has plenty of room to have fun. Michael and I are outdoors people so we are always playing with Chief in the yard and it’s good that are house is of a decent size because the games always seem to continue when we are all inside.

Chief has been such a special addition to our lives, I couldn’t imagine not having him here. We just adopted a little brother for Chief, his name is Murphy he is a Border Collie mix that came from the Humane Society at the time he was 7 weeks old now he is 4 months old. We felt Chief needed a friend that would have the same stamina the he has which we found. Chief and Murphy run around like you wouldn’t believe. We give Chief a life that he deserves and we are all so happy together in our home. Thank You.

Sincerely,
Candice Symington, Michael Olivieri, Chief, Murphy and Malarie

Teddy, adopted December, 2004

My boyfriend and I adopted Teddy on December 3rd 2004. He was part of a litter of collie mix puppies. He was about 3 months old when we got him and since then he has brought so much happiness into our home and everyone around him. When I picked him up from the shelter his sister was in the clinic for having a seizure and not too long after I adopted him he was diagnosed with epilepsy, but that didn't change a thing. He has been on medicine to control the seizures and he gets regular bloodwork and he is as happy as can be. He likes to swim and play tug of war and catch. He thinks he is a lap dog so when I'm on the computer he jumps up and lays accross my lap.He also enjoys going to the dog park and playing with his friends(many of them from the MCSPCA also) . Here are some pictures some from when he was a puppy and what he looks like now. Thank you for giving my boyfriend and I the chance to share a wonderful companion together. You guys do a great job, Keep up the good work.
Sincerely,
Alicia Higgins and Chris Wolfe

Kirby and Melody, adopted October, 2001

Hi, these two lovers are known as "THE TWINS", AKA...Kirby and Melody. I was fostering a mother cat and her three kittens for the shelter during the summer. Kora was the mom, but the babies didn't make it. That was very hard for me, and I didn't know if I could take anymore after that. I still had Kora, because there was no room for her to go back to the shelter, when I got a call from Stacey that two kittens were dropped off over night and were found at the front door, and could I foster them. I went in and looked at them (only 4 weeks old) and said YES! I would take them. Well after living with everyone for a few months, I became very attached to all of them, but I knew I had to bring them back soon so they could be adopted out as kittens. The day came when I brought everyone back, and had a breakdown when I had to leave them there. I brought Kora back with them, since she adopted them too as her own. Well I was at the shelter everyday visiting them to see if they had been adopted......I thought I would give them a week, and see what would happen. My cats at home were not too happy with a full house, so I thought I would give it a shot to try to get them adopted. I just couldn't do it! I was back within the week to take them home. I love them so much and they are the best kittens! They are very spoiled, and they seem to keep the other cats, Lucky (adopted at the shelter in 2003) and Horatio company. They are their big brothers! We are one big happy family. I wanted to keep Kora too, but thought I would give her one more week and weekend at the shelter to see if anyone would take her. Well, I went in on Monday the 31st of October, and she was adopted over the weekend! With a friend I might add....Tigerini! I was happy and sad to see her gone, but I knew that she would have a good home. If her new parents read this and want pictures of her, from when I fostered her, please get my contact info from Stacey or Nora at the shelter. I really have great pictures of her, and would love to share. Thanks to everyone at the shelter for all your hard work! The twins thank you too and from the picture you can tell they are very happy.
Thank you.......Jennifer, Kirby and Miss Melody.

Tiger, adopted 2000

About 4+ years ago, my husband and I adopted an older female cat from MCSPCA named Tiger. We had come in with our dog ( he was being neutered that day), and before picking him up that afternoon, we were visiting the kitties in the shelter.
Tiger was, at the time, in the kitty room roaming freely about with her friends - a poster with her picture was on the wall outside of the room. She playfully grabbed at our shoulders from her perch as we walked by, and took to my husband immediately....there was no leaving her behind...she came home with us.

We had been thinking of adopting a kitten that day, but once we found Tiger..her age estimated at about 8-9 years by the staff...and had come to find out that she had been at the shelter for an extended period of time,( almost a year) we knew that she could have a good home with us.

Maybe it was the fact that she was in the kitty room for so long, but when we got her home, she picked "her room" (the kitchen) in the house, and rarely left it. Many a meal was shared with our family at the table, and Tiger in "her" chair.
Sadly, just last week, after 4+ wonderful years of her company, Tiger passed away at home, naturally, comfortably, amidst the love of her human, feline and canine family. She is truly missed.

I wanted to write this story for her memory, as well as to remind everyone that adopting an OLDER cat can be just as fulfilling as taking home a cute, playful kitten. Somehow, I believe that she knew that we had given her a second chance at being part of a loving family, and that was reflected in the love that she showed us in the time that she was with us. Maybe, someone will see this, and think about taking home an older cat...or even better....an older cat AND a kitten for them to be friends with. There's lots of love in an older cat that has been given a second chance!!!!

Mikey (was Galahad), adopted September, 2005

On September 29th, I was adopted by my new Mommy and can I say - life has never been so good! Mommy wasn't crazy about my name, Galahad, so she calls me Mikey, but mostly she just says Sweet Kittie or Sweetheart. She loves me, I guess. And I fit right in at her house the first day. I have all my own toys, lots of window sills to sit in and watch the yard, I get brushed every day and sleep right next to Mommy at night. What more could a boy want?

Thanks MCSPCA, Mikey.

.

Cody (was Spots), adopted September, 2005

Hello, My name is Kathy Schoenleber...I adopted "Spots"(kitten) renamed him to "Cody" (as the kids called him that)on September 28th 2005. We are so happy we have him! He blended right in with the family. When i brought him home, he never hid or was scared. It was like he knew this house already lol.. He loves to run up and down the stairs and "jump" lol..Then when its bedtime, he loves sleeping in the big bed with us. He always gives out kisses as if he is thanking us for adopting him. Its the most cutest thing and the kids get a big kick out of that. Sorry dont have a pic but he is white with a black tail and black spots here and there. He is soooo adorable!

Thank you MCSPCA!!!!!

JitterPup (was Pup), adopted July, 2005

Hi, I'm JitterPup. At the MCSPCA I was known as just "Pup." I only stayed there for a week, but I'm so glad you guys helped me to find my (FOREVER!) Mom & Dad. I know they're as happy to have me, as I am to have them.

We had a rough first few months, but I feel much better now. At my first vet visit, they found an issue with my tummy. I had to have my spleen removed. (It was enlarged 4x what it should have been.) They also found out that I have borderline Cushings disease. We've all adjusted & I take my medicines like a good girl & eat low protein foods. My favorite medicine is all the hugs & kisses from my Mom & Dad. They can't help themselves!

We went to the Pet Fair & Walk in Red Bank today. Me & my parents had a great time. I was so happy to see all the other dogs. It was also nice to see that so many people care about us dogs! Thanks for all the great work you're doing. I hope all of the pets that stay with you there can find happy homes like mine!
Lots of Puppy Love,
JitterPup, and my Mom and Dad-
Jaime & Alex Dinkel

Chloe (was Baby), adopted April, 2005

After my cat Morgan died unexpectedly last summer, I wanted to wait awhile to get another cat until I felt like I was ready to get so attached to a new animal. When my boyfriend Brock and I came into the MSCPCA on April 30, 2005, we were excited about the prospect of bringing home a new family member. I knew it was going to be a hard choice with all of the adorable cats to choose from and it took us several hours to walk through the kennel and meet some of the especially cute ones that caught our eye. The prospect of choosing just one was so hard - why couldn't we just take them all?! - and we even considered taking home two. We didn't even see "Baby" (we've renamed her Chloe!) right away because she was in the open room with a number of other cats, but as soon as we met her we saw how playful and sweet she was. We talked it over and as soon as we made our decision that she was the one we wanted, we were anxious to introduce her to her new home! That first weekend with her was very memorable, we figured out why her name was Baby! We barely got any sleep, she kept us up most of the night crying and I honestly felt like we had a new baby in the house. And not much has changed, she loves sleeping with us and in the morning when she's hungry, she loves to cry and headbutt us to wake us up! But my boyfriend and I were in love with her almost instantly and since then the three of us are just one big happy family. She is such a big part of our lives, I cant imagine her not being here with us. And I think all the time of how happy I am to know that we were able to give such an adorable little girl a good home! Thank you to everyone at MSCPA for taking such good care of all the animals who come to you lost or abandoned or hurt, and for helping find such a good match for us. I hope to come back at some point and find Chloe a brother or sister!
Kara Lott
~PS...I attached a picture we took of Chloe with one of her favorite things, her brush! She holds it in her paw like she's going to brush herself and she rubs her head on it vigorously. I've never seen a cat who likes to be brushed/combed so much! It's really adorable!

Summer (was Ginger), adopted August, 2005

My children and I had been visiting the MCSPCA every weekend in hopes of finding our forever companion for a period of several months. We always left feeling disappointed. I knew that finding a dog that would be good with two small children and a cat would be difficult so I didn't give up hope. Then one fateful Sunday I was feeling kinda lazy. I wasn't sure if I wanted to make the trip out to the shelter only to come home empty handed, again. But eventually I decided that it would be just my luck not to go this one weekend and miss out on my future companion. Boy did I make a good choice in going. There in the back of one of the kennels was my beautiful Summer, formerly known as Ginger. She was very sweet and quiet. She came right over to the fence and leaned against it so she could be rubbed. We brought her out for a walk and was FANTASTIC with my children, even the four yro that tends to be very "hands on". It was love at first sight for all of us. It turns out that Summer was picked up as a stray. She was grossly underweight. She had tell-tale signs of neglect. Part of her tail and ear was missing due to flies. Apparently she was tied on a short leash for most of her life and was being eaten alive by flies. The MCSPCA estimated that Summer was 3-4 years old. She was classified as a beagle/shep/terrier mix although several people have told me they can see greyhound or whippet in her. My vet even told me that she can see some Doberman in her. I don't particularly care what kind of mutt she is, as long as she's my mutt. My family loves her and we can tell she loves us.

Shelter animals usually can tell that they have been rescued and tend to be very appreciative and loving for being given a second chance. I tell anyone looking to adopt whether its a dog, cat, rabbit, etc....ADOPT A SHELTER ANIMAL!! Avoid pet shops and puppy mills. Shelter animals are the best. And also, please don't count out senior companions. Older animals can fill your life with just as much love and companionship!

Olivia (was Spots), adopted June, 2004

Dear Friends,

Sorry it took so long for you to hear from me but the time has just flown by. Last summer my mommy and daddy came to the shelter and fell in love with me. When daddy ran around with me I knew that my years at the shelter were over! On that warm day in June, I became part of their family.

At home I live like a princess. I have my own part of the couch with my personal blanket ~ I even push people off the couch if they try to sit in my spot! I have beautiful bandannas and doggy tees that I strut around in. During this cold winter, I got a warm furry leopard print coat! Mommy and daddy treat me like I am their daughter. They take me out with them wherever they go (we went trick or treating last year), they play with me everyday, and I am allowed to sleep on the bed with them. When they get married this November, I will even get to be the ringbearer (and wear a beautiful set of silver wings)!

Shortly after taking me home last year, mommy received information and found my birthdate (August 8, 2000). We had a big party with my aunts and uncles, grandparents and great-grandparents for my fourth birthday. They all brought me wonderful presents!

I just want to send my love your way! I have to go dream of my upcoming fifth birthday and the party we'll be having soon.

Love, woof, woof Olivia

Mason
(was Willie), adopted June, 2004

Hi! We adopted Willie in June. We were going to the shelter just to "look." As soon as we saw Willie we knew we wanted him. He had the most beautiful coloring. The people at the shelter let us play with him outside and we knew this was our dog. We took him home that night and we changed his name to Mason. Mason is a friendly, playful, and sweet dog. He loves cuddling up next to us and playing in the backyard. Although many people think pitbulls are scary, Mason proves how gentle and loving they really can be. Everyday we are so thankful that Mason is a part of our lives!

Erin Monahan and Asif Damji

Vinnie, adopted 2000

Here's Vinny, the skinny (well he was skinny when we got him) white terrier mix we adopted from MCSPCA in the summer of 2000. He has a rescue Brittany sister, Annie, and a rescue Cocker brother, Russell, but even though he is the little guy, he still runs things around here. Not doing too bad for a little mutt you guys picked up starving off the street.

He 's having fun and so are we.

John and Mary Lou Palumbo

Puddin Pie, adopted June 2005

When nine- year old Puddin Pie's elderly owner passed away, a family member brought her to the shelter.

Puddin' just loves being part of our home and we feel so lucky to have her. She's the perfect companion and fits into our family just like she's been here forever. Her favorite things are long walks; chasing bees in our back yard, relaxing on the porch or sofa with us, belly rubs, her daily brushing, and of course, dog treats. She also enjoys visits with our daughter's dog Shadow, also adopted from the MCSPCA at age 8.

We hope people consider adopting older dogs - Puddin' was completely housetrained, well mannered, and we are quite sure she understands English. She's gentle and sweet and well loved by everyone.

Sincerely,
Lorraine and Rob Koleda

Buddy (was Puppy) and Lady, adopted December 2004

Puppy, who is now called Buddy was at the shelter for a very long time. We were glad to be able to give him a home. At first he was a bit shy, but has since come out of his shell. We call him Buddy Bear because he is such a big teddy bear. He loves to give kisses and sit on my lap( he thinks he is a lap dog even-though all that fits in my lap is his butt). He had a rocky start in life and is not always sure he likes other dogs. He loves to go for walks and is learning how to walk nice and not pull me down the street. He also loves the car and loves to lick the glass (the back sit of my car is now his full of drool and hair no matter how much I clean it) hahaha. We love him so much and are so happy to give him the home he deserves!

Lady, who is the talker of the two, is a chatter box. She was at the shelter for a couple of months and is a hand full! She loves to chase her tail and swim in the bay. We went to the shelter to bring one dog home but when we were there and saw all the pets that needed a home my heart hurt. So since I am a huge dog lover and have had more then one at a time before, I just had to take 2. Lady already knows how to get her way with me(hahaha) We love her and her wet kisses too.

I have to admit at first, we were a little nervous about adopting pit bulls. But they are the sweetest most loving dogs I have ever had! They were a little scared of each other at first, but are learning to love each other. They even ruff house in the yard together now! With a little time we have become a big happy pack.

Lisa and Rich

Bear, rescued and adopted May 2003

I'm not sure of the name of the woman at your shelter who saw a glimmer of good in Bear...an aggressive, 10 month old bichon who'd been left with you in the spring of 03. Thankfully, she took a leap of faith and called Delaware Valley Bichon Rescue. My husband and I drove up on May 30, 2003 and picked up Bear. Poor guy had been terribly abused by the woman he lived with and was terrified of other dogs as well. It took seven months for him to trust me but thankfully was okay with men...generally. We didn't feel that we could adopt Bear out and added him to our family instead. What a wonderful boy
he's become. I've attached a picture of Bear alone and one of him as a member of our gang + fosters sitting with my husband. Just thought you might enjoy seeing him and knowing that he did indeed turn out to be a great companion...we couldn't think of ever parting with him.

Thank you for taking a chance on Bear.

Janet MacKerchar

Coco, adopted June 2005

My name is Jason and I recently adopted Coco. She is a great dog and i love her very much.

I am so glad that I chose her. Here is a picture of her on her first night in her new home.

Thanx for all of your help!

Bruno (was Brick), adopted September 2004

Hi to all my friends at the MCSPCA. I just wanted to give you an update since I found my new home. My name is Bruno now, but most of you were calling me Meatball during my stay there (aka Brick). Well, where do I begin..... I am such a happy guy, not to mention, my mom and dad treat me like a king. They really love me a lot. They are always giving me belly rubs (not that I'm complaining) and kissing me! Of course, I am kissing them too!!! I love car rides and will go anywhere you want to take me. I love the beach, they take me there all the time. The water is great. I love my yard, where I get to run in circles and then relax and lay in the sun. I have put on a few pounds in the last 10 months, but everyone says I look very healthy and I am built very solid. I do have a brother, his name is Matt and he is 14. Sometimes I get to go to his baseball games and that is lots of fun too. I have made so many new friends and I couldn't be happier.

Thanks to everyone who took care of me while I was at the MCSPCA. Please tell Nan she was right........ I adjusted to my new home very quickly (24 hours).

Love your friend, Bruno

Zoe (was Lulu), adopted May 2004

Hi! My name is Zoe but you might remember me as LULU. My mom and dad are Dania and Greg and they adopted me on May 4, 2004 from the MCSPCA. I am so happy with my mom and dad. We go everywhere together and I love being out and about. My favorite pasttimes are belly rubs which is quickly followed by naptime. I love going for walks and the occasional BIG bone is always a treat. I have a couple of pictures that you might remember me by. The first pic is the very first one I ever took with my dad on the day I was adopted. The next one is with my mom and dad and finally the third one is a more recent shot of me hanging out. Well that's it for now.

All the best ,

Zoe

Pugsley, adopted September 2003

I adopted Pugsley Addams 2 years ago this month. He is a purebred black Pug who will turn 6 years old this October. When I first visited the SPCA I had every intention of adopting a cat but being unable to decide on which of the many wonderful cats you had for adoption I decided to take a break and check out the dogs. Well just as I was finishing my "tour" I wound up in the small dog room. All of the dogs were barking and yapping at my arrival except for one lone little guy just sitting in his cage staring very seriously into space. I asked one of your attendants why he was there and what was wrong with him and she said "NOTHING!". As it turns out his family gave him up after raising him for four years because he wasn't getting along with another dog they had brought into the family. I asked her if I could meet him and she took him out of his cage and brought him outside. I immediately fell in love with his squishy little face and his quiet demeaner. He was pretty shy at
first but he eventually sniffed me and allowed me to pet and talk to him. My brother was with me and I turned to him and said "I am taking him home!". He thought I was pretty nuts but he also found Pugsley to be sweet and told me to go for it! I think Pugsley must have been excited about finding a new home too because he promptly decided to relieve himself on my brother's leg! Of course the attendant assured me he was housebroken (which he is) and we just laughed at Pugsleys boldness. I filled out the adoption papers and a week later I brought him home where he adjusted quickly to his new home!

The success of the story is-- shortly after adopting Pugsley I got the chance to move to New York City and I took Pugsley with me. He really loves the big city and has met so many other pugs on his journeys through Central Park! He gets along wonderfully with my roomates, friends and family and is just a delight to have around. I was told when I adopted him that he didn't get along with other dogs but I don't find this statement to be 100% true. Occassionally he growls at big dogs but over-all he is friendly and outgoing. I really tested his tolerance for other dogs when I started dating my now fiance who has a chocolate lab named Bosco. At first Pugsley was jealous of Bosco and would growl and nip at him when Bosco would try to eat his food or if I didn't show him enough attention. It took a few months of introductions to really get Pugsley used to Bosco and now he follows him around "like a puppy dog" and they are the best of friends.

I think sometimes people give up on their dogs/cats too quickly before trying to find a solution to a behavior problem. Pugsley may have had troubles at his former owners home but with a bit of guidance, training and lots of love he has developed into a wonderful pet and member of the family. He has been through a lot in his short life but I think now he finally realizes that he has found a friend for life in me (and Bosco!) and he is truly the best dog a person could have.

Thanks for letting me adopt him. I can't remember what my life was life before he came along!

Sincerely,
Alexandra

Loverboy (was Winks , adopted May 2005)
Hi, just wanted to send a big hello to all my friends at the MCSPCA. My name used to be Winks but my new mommy renamed me Lover because I am such a good boy and we kiss all the time. From the first moment my blue eyes met her green eyes, I knew it was love. Life is good. I get to sleep in the big bed and run up and down the stairs. The other night mommy got into a big tub full of water with things she told me were called bubbles. I tried to eat them but they just disappeared when I caught them...That was really fun. She feeds me in my very own bowl, it has pictures of cats on it. Oh there is one drawback to this adoption thing - mommy took me to an animal doctor and he put a thermometer in my hinny. I hope that doesn't happen to often! Well, me & mommy are very happy together and we have you to thank.

Kisses and licks to all,
Susan & Loverboy

Update June 2006:
I've been looking forward to updating my old friends at MCSPCA but I had to wait for my mommy to sign onto the computer she has it password protected and I'm still honing my mental telepathy skills.

Anyway, this Mother's Day we celebrated our first anniversary! Just one year ago I was living with you in the big room with the cages (I had one by the window). I remember the day mommy came to get me. I heard her talking with an Adoption Counselor about my FIV+ status. The Counselor was telling her all about it. I was screaming at her "I'm okay, I'm normal, I won't be any problem" and she looked at me and said "what a pretty little MEOW he has". Well I tried! Thank God mommy could understand the Adoption Counselor because I think she told her the same thing I did.

Anyway, life just seems to get better and better. I can't believe how much I have learned. I play this really fun game with my mommy when she comes down the stairs in the morning to go to work. I hide behind the plant on the landing and jump out and grab at her feet. Sometimes I actually get my claw caught in her stocking, I like when that happens because she goes back upstairs and a few minutes later comes down again - and there I am. Speaking of claws, mommy takes me every month to a place called PETsMART to get a manicure. We get into the car and I sit in the seat next to mommy and look out the window. She turns on the radio and sings to me as we drive. When we get there I sit in the cart and mommy pushes me up and down the aisles. All these nice people pet me and tell mommy how handsome and well behaved I am. I can't figure out what the big deal is, if cats weren't supposed to sit in the carts they wouldn't have put seats in them. There is a really nice lady who pets me and kisses me and trims my nails. I like it! Sometimes when we go there they are having a pet adoption day. I am trying to plant subliminal suggestions in mommy's mind to get me a brother or a sister - so far it isn't working. Got any ideas?

Well I have to go patrol the house and check my food bowl. I'm attaching a picture of me helping mommy read the newspaper and clip coupons. I'm not real good at cutting along the lines yet. Be well and send my love to everyone. I can't thank you enough for all that you do!!!!!

Love, Loverboy

Kairos (was Tigger, adopted January 2005)

We adopted Kairos and he became part of our already large family of people and tropical fish. His story up to this point is a bit sad, and mostly unknown. About six months ago, he was rescued from some sort of testing laboratory, and brought to a rescue kennel, where he remained until last week, when he was brought to the shelter. The kennel owner was very fond of him, and felt she had become too attached, and that was our good fortune.

We weren't exactly looking for a dog, but we knew we'd be getting one this year. The timing was good, though, as our budget just opened up enough to allow for the special needs of a large pet, and the tax refund arrival allowed us to stock up on equipment and food, as well as pay the shelter fees for taking the dog.

At the shelter, our Kairos is known as Tigger, but we're not going to hold that against him. We are anxious to see him, because he was neutered today, and we want to make sure he's feeling okay and give him plenty of love and comfort after such an ordeal. But we don't get to pick him up til tomorrow afternoon.

So far, we've gotten a nice harness for buckling him into a seat belt, and a leash to attach to that, plus a cool yellow vest for walks, because he's not gotten enough exercise, and we think he'll need help adjusting to the cold. We're going to buy him a training leash and collar as he gets used to things, and train him according to advice from the Monks of New Skete. We got their book, How To Be Your Dog's Best Friend, and another book called Adopting a Dog, by John Ross and Barbara McKinney. We also ordered this great portable bed that will serve as a "crate," since he's used to spending most of his time in a confined space, and we want him to feel he can do that if he needs to. The best thing about this portable bed is that we can take it with us when we go camping this summer. We think Kairos is going to love camping.

Rocco (adopted March 2005)

Val met Rocco when she was volunteering at the shelter. The shepherd-mix was 7 years old. He had two homes before being surrendered to the MCSPCA. Val immediately fell for Rocco's handsome looks and nice manners. But she and her husband weren't sure they wanted to commit to caring for a dog at home. Every week at the shelter, Rocco would wag his tail at Val until she could no longer resist him. They brought him home on New Year's Eve. Now they can't imagine life without him. Rocco enjoys lots of attention, walks, treats, and naps.

Because he was a big boy, Rocco was with the MCSPCA for a while. We are so happy he has found his match! Congratulations Rocco and Val!

Emma (AKA Spectacles adopted March 2005)

Hi I'm Emma but most of you at the MCSPCA know me as Spectacles. Sorry I didn't write sooner but I've been really busy. I have a huge backyard that is safe and fun for me to run around in and I think my mom owns a toy store because I have a ton of them. I go for a walk at least once a day and I love car rides. My favorite snack...Cheese! I hear that word and I come running.
I just graduated from school this week. I did really well but when I see people I just want to hug and kiss them that I forget I can't jump.

That's my mom with me in the picture. She is always telling me how much she loves me and that she is so lucky that I picked her to be my mom. She says I took away the pain for her and my grandma after losing Lacey who was also a pound puppy.

Besides my mom I live with my Grandparents. They are a lot of fun. They let me get away with a lot more than my mom does but who can say "NO" to this cute face? I also have an Aunt and Uncle. I go with my mom every weekend to visit at there house. For my first Easter I got lots of gifts, my own Easter Basket and the best part...Spending it with the whole family!!
Well I have to get back to playing but I just wanted to thank everyone at the MCSPCA especially Laura for helping me find HOME!

Eddie (adopted November 2004)

We adopted Eddie in November 2004 from the MCSPCA. Eddie is a special needs dog, as he's neurologic and has a tendency to shake. We're not really sure what happened to him to cause this, but he spent a lot of time with you and at the Red Bank Vet Hospital.

After meeting our first dog Yankee, Eddie fell in love with her. He walked around her, sniffing her and giving her kisses. He wouldn't go back inside unless she walked with him! We couldn't leave him there since they seemed to like each other so much. After picking him up, Eddie and Yankee have been best friends ever since. They spend the day playing tug of war and chasing each other around the back yard. Eddie also likes to go to the dog park and run around like a maniac. He's helped Yankee get over her separation anxiety and she's helped Eddie learn some coordination (he frequently beats her at tug of war!) Yankee's also taught him how to jump up on the bed, as he likes to be close to his new family. He's been a great addition to our home and we love him very much.

Louis and Dizzy (Adopted November 2003)
This is Louis (Harry) and Dizzy (Eloise), littermates that we adopted in November 2003. Dizzy is asthmatic and requires special care, but we make sure our little girl gets whatever she needs. Louis is the tough guy and will eat anything in sight. He once dragged a loaf of bread off the counter, ripped through the plastic and ate almost half of it. Dizzy is very picky and eats almost nothing, so they have to be separated when they eat, or he will eat all of her food. They are very protective of each other. Dizzy likes to drive us crazy and get trapped in closets and cabinets. Louis meows non-stop next to wherever she is stuck, to let us know where she is. We’ve learned to make sure she’s not locked in anywhere before we leave the house. They are best friends and bathe each other regularly, but they also fight – just like any siblings. We love them very much and they are really happy here. Another update - a few months before they came to us, I found a feral cat in the backyard. I was able to do a TNR and had her spayed and got her all of her shots. I always left out food for her and after a few months, she began to come when I called her (Kitty) and eventually let me hold her. When winter came, I brought her inside, but had to keep her separated from Louis and Dizzy, who had joined us by then. She was such a special girl and I loved her a lot, but we had no room for three, so I brought her to the SPCA. I never stopped thinking about her, so I called yesterday to see how she was. One of your staffers was kind enough to call her new owners and called me back to tell me that they love her and she is very happy in her new home. I miss her a lot, but I’m so happy to know that she is in a good place. Just wanted to let you know that everything turned out OK for Dizzy, Louis, and Kitty.

Belle (October 2004)

We adopted Belle in October 2004 to keep me and my boyfriend company. She is the sweetest animal I have ever owned. She is right there to greet you as soon as you come in the apartment and loves giving you head buts while purring contentedly. She sleeps right with you on your chest, curled in a little ball, and likes sitting in the bathroom/shower (when no one else is in there). She is a wonderful addition to our family and we can not stop taking pictures of her.

Luke and Leah (adopted January 2005)

We adopted Luke and Leah on January 16, 2005.

We just recently had to put two of our pets to sleep and having had pets all my life, there was something missing.

So, I talked my family into adopting a cat and by the time I made it to the shelter, it was 2 cats!

Luke and Leah are adapting well, becoming more friendly and happy as the days go by. Leah is the more aggressive and inquisitive one, while Luke is still a little skiddish and more intimidated.

They are both happy, purring little 9 month old kitties and we all love them – even the cockatiel we have.

Thanks MCSPCA!

Seashell (adopted December 2004)

Hi everyone!

It's me Annie! You all remember me as Seashell. My new mom and dad adopted me on December 30, 2004 (they like to think me as their New Year's baby). In my new life, I've been renamed to Annie and am adapting to my new name and home very nicely. My new family tells me that I'm loving, affectionate, well mannered and the best companion anyone could ever ask for. Since I've been with them, I have pretty much taken charge of the house. I take care of my new family and make sure they are always kept warm because I like to snuggle up very closely.

Walks in the park, fetch in my new fenced-in backyard, long car rides, tummy scratches and squeaky toys always keep me happy and bouncing around leaving a smile on anyone's face that I pass by. I love to give hugs and gentle kisses and I pose very pretty for the camera. While I do have my own bed, I love to sleep with mom and dad. They say that I like to snore, but I tell them "who me"?

My new family took me to Dr. Berg and he said that I passed my first doctor's appointment with flying colors (very exciting!). Thank you to all the wonderful people of the Monmouth County SPCA who took care of me during my long stay. You definitely loved me and had faith in me.

Hugs and kisses,

Annie (a.k.a Seashell)

Mikey (adopted September 2003)

Mikey found me in August 2003, but he didn't come home until mid-September. I moved to Monmouth County in the middle of August with my two cats and 4 foot iguana. Like most pet owners, I had to make a trip to the local Petsmart on a Saturday afternoon. I know better than to walk by the adoption areas because I always end up wanting to save all the pets there. This time a friend that was with me insisted on going to the MCSPCA area to look at the animals. I knew this was a bad idea for me since I did not intend on adopting any more animals (I felt 3 was enough). I saw two cats there, one looked like a tiny version of my 25 pound boy Oscar, the other was a full size (16 pounds!!) orange and white cat.....Mikey. When I aproached his cage, he got right up and started begging for my attention, when I was talking to the volunteer he kept batting at my drink bottle. I was in love. Having just moved and dealing with tax season, I knew I couldn't adopt another animal, but I couldn't stop thinking about him after we left. Perfect age, perfect size and just too cute. I left it to "fate" and decided that if he was still available after tax season (about a month later) I would go get him. I was terrified someone else would adopt him (who wouldn't want such a handsome boy?), I called almost weekly to see if he was available. Finally the Saturday before my deadline, I went and picked him up. He was incredibly playful and loved having his belly rubbed. Since was his second trip to the shelter, I promised him on his way home that he would NEVER see the inside of a shelter again and he would always have lots of love. I was nervous about him interacting with my other two cats since they are declawed and he is not. For the first few days, the other cats wouldn't "talk" to Mikey, but no fights broke out. After a week or so, the hissing stopped and they all started to play together. Now, there are times when I have nearly 50 pounds of cat tearing through my house! Mikey has been a wonderful addition to my home and family (except when he plays with the blinds at 6 am on sundays to let me know its time for breakfast). Many thanks to the great volunteers at the MCSPCA, please keep up the good work!!

Mulder (adopted December 2004)

Merry Christmas! Woof woof! It has been 18 days and about 4 hours since I have been in my new home, with my new people (but who is counting?) They are giving me lots of walks and food. A while back, they took me to the nice doctor Alan, who said that I was healthy. I have been showing them a lot of the tricks I know, like “sit,” “stay,” “come,” and “lie down.” Sometimes I even try to show them “roll over,” but they really seem to be confused by that. They are really funny – the one with glasses keeps pointing one big eye at me, then making a “kodak” noise. A while later, he will come back into the house with “pictures.” Then they get really excited and tell me how handsome I am.

Hopefully, I can come back to visit (not to stay!) sometime. I still don't like to ride in the car very much, though, so I don't know when that will be.

Ok, there are some interesting sounds in the hallway, so I have to go bark.
Love, Mulder

P.S. That is me in the middle. I have more pictures on my web page: http://home.earthlink.net/~mulder_marker

Dexter (adopted December 2004)

Hello,

My name is Dexter and I was adopted on September 26, 2004. I was a special birthday present for a special 14- year old girl named Ariel. She is taking very good care of me. I sleep in her bed with her every night and watch ABC news with her before she goes off to school at six the morning. I love all of her friends because they love me. We go in the car all the time. I love to lick the bathtub after she takes a shower! Many other cat owners say I'm spoiled! I get so many toys all the time and we even go shopping together at Petsmart! I would definately pick being with Ariel than being stray on the beach. When I first saw Ariel, I knew she would come back for me. And she did! She always says that I was the kitten for her. When I went to my first vet appointment I found out I had flea dirt so Ariel gave me a kitten bath and I feel all better now! My vet, she says I have an unusual personality. I cuddle and love, I purr all the time. Before I moved in Daddy snored alot. But now, we have snoring and purring in the house! I follow Ariel all around the house. During the day, Ariel goes to high school, her sister goes to middle school, daddy goes to work far away from here, and mommy works really close! Sometimes she will come and see me during the day! But, otherwise, I have the house to myself. I am so happy that Ariel took me home, I can't wait to spend the next 10 years and many more to come!!

Love, Dexter

Shadow (adopted December 2004)

Hi everyone! My name is Shadow and I am eight years old. I was adopted from the shelter after being there for 6 months! Mommy thought I was adorable and very sweet so she took me for my first walk at the shelter, and we fell in love! She and my new daddy took me home a couple of days later and I love my new home! I'm very laid-back until someone picks up my leash and I know it's time for a walk- then I jump up and down like a puppy and even "talk"! My favorite activities are chasing ducks and squirrels, riding in the car with Mommy, and snuggling up on the couch with my new family. I even made friends with my Grandma's German Shorthaired Pointer, Robin. (What can I say? With my good looks, of course I'm a ladies' man). I want to tell everyone that older pets
make great companions. I am so happy I found my forever home, and I let Mommy and Daddy and all their friends know how much I love them everyday with lots of snuggles and kisses! Thank you to everyone at the MCSPCA for taking such good
care of me until I found my new home.

Love, Shadow,

Kennedy (adopted October 2004)

Hello There,

I just adopted Kennedy on Halloween. When I was at the shelter lots of younger cats were jumping up and down for attention but seven year old Kennedy just looked at me, purred, and I could see her thinking "You *will* take me home." So I did and we are having a wonderful time. I'm a graduate student so I spend a lot of time at home reading. Kennedy is a very academic cat and she likes to curl up on my lap and put out one paw on the book to keep the page open, purring all the while. Never fear though, we also take lots of study breaks to play. Kennedy likes to chase small balls, shoe laces, and lights.
